The Soo is a big family, and when one member of our family suffers, it’s the responsibility of all of us to step up and support those in need. That is what we are being called upon to do today. I will ensure that the City does everything we can to support affected workers in the days ahead, and I know our community will do the same.
The layoffs at Algoma Steel underscore the profound and escalating threat that the ongoing steel tariffs pose to the Canadian steel industry and to communities like Sault Ste. Marie. I have reached out to Prime Minister Carney and Premier Ford to make clear that, given both governments played essential roles in supporting Algoma’s transition to electric steelmaking, there is a clear responsibility for them to support our community now, when it is needed most.
This situation requires immediate, decisive action. Sault Ste. Marie needs the Governments of Canada and Ontario to move quickly, and I will aggressively advocate for the support we need.
